I am searching for information on my great-grandfather, Augustus Croft, who arrived in the United States about 1845 when he was 2 years old. His parents' names were Augustus Croft, Sr., and Elizabeth Croft. I believe the spelling of the name was changed when they arrived. According to the 1880 census records in Iowa where he was married in 1871, he was born in Baden, Germany (not Baden-Baden). I keep hitting a brick wall in terms of finding his actual birth town, what port they came through in the US, and where they lived in western Pennsylvania for a period of time. He was in the Civil War (Ohio Volunteers, 155th, Company D) and I have his mustering out papers but they don't reflect anything specific other than his name and his wife's name.
Does anyone have any information on my elusive g-grand?
