Investigating the Research Repositories
George G. Morgan
By the time you read this, I'll be leading a research tour in London, England, and everyone is very excited! In my last column, "
Setting Your Goals for a Genealogy Trip", I discussed the importance of advance preparation for your genealogical research trips, regardless of where you're going.
That includes identifying the individuals you want to research, organizing the materials, re-reading them in detail, and re-evaluating all the evidence
you have already located for these people. It also means identifying the repositories of materials in the area where you will be researching and
determining what you are likely to be able to find (or not find) and access (or not access) there.
This week, I want to discuss the process of learning about these document and informational repositories. Regardless of
your destination, you really have to know where you are likely to find the information you're seeking. Advance preparation of these venues will allow
you to work like a professional and to spend your time on-site in research rather than poring over the catalog to see what's there.
