Exploring Westmoreland

Until 1974 Westmoreland was the name of a county in the north of England. Today it survives as part of a place name, Appleby-in-Westmoreland.
I have embarked on this exploration because of a revived interest in some ancestors of my paternal grandmother. The file popped to the surface
in my recent move, and at the same time, ideas popped into my head. It is quite possible enough material can be found online to assess the chances
of making progress and, going a step farther, perhaps I will be able to view images or transcripts of records. In this article I explore the
background to my renewed interest in this English county.
